A new Men’s counselling therapy group starts in Exeter in February 2018.

If you would like to be considered for joining this men’s group please do contact me. The cost of this group is yet to be fixed and will be in the region of £15-£20 dependent of the cost of the venue hire.

I went the conference “Putting men into mental health” held in Somerset.  It was good to see so may men willing to talk about men’s mental health and men empowered to share their story. Of course there were women present and we need their help in overcoming the inequality in men’s mental health.

There is a huge gender inequality in men’s mental health.

  • 78% of deaths by suicide are male
  • 73% of adults who ‘go missing’ from home are men
  • 87% of rough sleepers are men
  • More than two thirds of drug related deaths occur in men

Men often have mental health needs that are distinct from those of women and which are particularly associated with the lived experience of being male.

  • Men are more unwilling to seek professional help
  • Men appear less likely to recognise or act on warning signs
  • 73% of women who are depressed have talked to someone about it but only 53% of depressed men have.

The are many complex and cultural issues surrounding men’s health and simply put being a man is part of the problem. We think we need to be ‘a man’, be strong, be masculine and yet these same beliefs perpetuate the unspoken problem of men’s mental health.


New Year – Old Resolutions

It is that time of year when many people decide to make a resolution to change something in their life. The decision to change is normally a conscious decision. A decision taken with the waking or here & now mind. How often have you tried and failed to make that change. The likelihood is that your unconscious mind prevents you. The unconscious mind runs the body’s programmes in the background. So no matter what you may consciously decide to change the chances are that your own unconscious mind will undermine your best efforts.

This is where clinical hypnotherapy and psychotherapy can help. Therapy can facilitate you in making the changes you want to at a behavioural and unconscious level. Change the programme in the background (the unconscious) and your conscious mind can achieve your goals easily.

How To Choose a Therapist.

So how do you choose a therapist?

Well recommendation is always very helpful.  And if you haven’t had a personal recommendation here are some questions  you may want to consider asking:


  • Is the hypnotherapist insured professionally?
  • Are they a member of a professional body such as the General Hypnotherapy Register?
  • Are they registered with the Complimentary & Natural Healthcare Council ?
  • How long have they been in practice?
  • What training did they undertake and what qualifications do they have?


  • Are they registered with the UK Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP) or BPS?
  • How frequently do they take their case load to a psychotherapy supervisor and is the supervisor UKCP  or BPS egistered?
  • What is their type (modality) of psychotherapy e.g. Drama, Gestalt or Transactional Analysis? Do you think this approach will help you?

You may want to know what the therapist does to ensure their own professional knowledge and practice is up to date. This is often referred to as “Continuing Professional Development” (CPD).

A personal recommendation from another person is always helpful and I think the most important thing to consider is whether you can work with the therapist.  Are they someone whom you can trust and open up to? Choosing a therapist can be a bit like a lucky dip.

You should know after that first session, whether you can work with that particular therapist.  Trust your own unconscious here or if you prefer, your own instinct.  If you have any doubts whatsoever then find another therapist. After all there are plenty to choose from.  The key is finding someone effective and whom you get on with.

You can find many therapists who will work with you. The important factor is finding a therapist who you want to work with.


Using Time for Therapy

I have just completed some further trainings in Time Line Processing.

Q “So what’s that all about”?

A “Well most unwanted emotional responses e.g. panic attacks or unwanted behaviours such as a phobia are orientated in time. By this I mean the problem is perceived as being in the future or the past. We are conditioned with time and by time. Time Line is a powerful tool for change by allowing you to re-program past and future memories.




Anxiety is a condition caused by the mind and can be fixed by the mind. Human beings especially those of us in the West are conditioned by time,though time is just a metaphor and doesn’t really exist there is only the present moment.  So how does all this help with anxiety?

Well anxiety tends to be a something that is referenced in the future. We tend to be anxious about something in the future, something that may or may not happen and the consequences of such. So try being anxious about something that has happened!
