You may want to know what the therapist does to ensure their own professional knowledge and practice is up to date. This is often referred to as “Continuing Professional Development” (CPD).
A personal recommendation from another person is always helpful and I think the most important thing to consider is whether you can work with the therapist. Are they someone whom you can trust and open up to? Choosing a therapist can be a bit like a lucky dip.
You should know after that first session, whether you can work with that particular therapist. Trust your own unconscious here or if you prefer, your own instinct. If you have any doubts whatsoever then find another therapist. After all there are plenty to choose from. The key is finding someone effective and whom you get on with.
You can find many therapists who will work with you. The important factor is finding a therapist who you want to work with.
